Istana Alam Shah

Klang is the royal town of the State of Selangor is one of the oldest cities in the country--older than Kuala Lumpur--is noted for its fine royal palace known as the Istana Alam Shah. It is not far from the Kota Raja Mahdi, the fort built in 1886 by Raja Mahdi, ruler of Selangor during the civil war and the Gedung Raja Abdullah, built in 1856 as a warehouse for weapons and food.

The palace was originally built in 1905 during the reign of Sultan Alauddin Sulaiman Shah, 5th Selangor Sultan. It was renovated by Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah the 7th Sultan in 2000. The late Yang Di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, was particularly close to the rakyat, earning the nickname of 'ruler with the heart of the people'. He even offered his official palace Istana Alam Shah in Klang to be turned into a hospital when work on the Klang General Hospital project was delayed at one point. He was proclaimed sultan on the death of his father, 2nd September 1960. Installed 3rd September 1960. Crowned at Alam Shah Palace, Klang, 28th June 1961.

Deputy Sultan Selangor HRH Raja Idris Shah Ibni Sultan Salahudin Abdul Aziz Shah al-Haj (the current Sultan) was also installed at the Alam Shah Palace, Klang on 24 April 1999.

TANA UMAGA bades farewell

After playing 79 matches for the All Blacks, including 74 Tests (21 of those as Captain) Tana Umaga confirmed his retirement from international rugby at a press conference on January 10, 2006. His main reason for retiring was to spend more time with his family. Umaga will continue to play rugby for the Hurricanes in the Super 14 and the Lions in the NPC.

Ionatana Falefasa "Tana" Umaga, ONZM,(born May 27, 1973) is a New Zealand rugby union footballer and former captain of the national team, the All Blacks. He was capped 74 times for his country.Born in Lower Hutt to Samoan immigrant parents, Tana Umaga was originally a rugby league player (and an Under 19's New Zealand representative in that sport for two years). In 1992 aged 18 he had trials with NRL side Newcastle Knights but returned to New Zealand because of homesickness. He switched to union after being persuaded by his elder brother Mike, a Samoan rugby union international. The brothers met in one test match, in 1999—the All Blacks won 71-13, with Tana scoring two tries.

Jonathan Falefasa Umaga, better known to us all as Tana is Graham Henry’s choice as 2004 All Blacks captain. He is the Hurricanes and Wellington Lions skipper and an inspirational leader. He became the 20th player to have played 50 Tests for New Zealand in 2003.

Umaga is also respected for his sportsmanship. In a test match against Wales on June 21, 2003, Welsh captain Colin Charvis was knocked out by a tackle from All Blacks forward Jerry Collins, and Umaga stopped playing (despite his team being in an attacking position) to check that Charvis had not swallowed his mouthguard, and place him in the recovery position. For this act, the International Committee for Fair Play awarded Umaga the Pierre de Coubertin Trophy, an award for outstanding sportsmanship (named for Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympic Games). The Welsh Rugby Union also presented him with a figurine to honour this display of sportsmanship.

"When I got knocked out Tana was brilliant - I was unconscious but he rolled me over and ensured I didn't swallow my gum-shield," Charvis said. Umaga missed virtually the entire 2003 Rugby Union World Cup, after being injured in a freak collision with teammate Carlos Spencer in the opening match against Italy. He suffered a damaged posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, and was forced to leave the field, not returning for the remainder of the tournament, which saw the All Blacks eliminated in the semi-finals by the Wallabies.

He leaves the international game with just about a full CV. He's lifted the Bledisloe Cup, beaten the Springboks and Lions, thrashed the best that the UK could throw at him. He's even won an NPC. A Super 14 title with the Hurricanes would be fitting as he enters his twilight years. A World Cup would be even more appropriate. Sadly that won't happen now. But in many ways, Umaga has already won his World Cup. His part in New Zealand winning the hosting rights to the 2011 tournament was another mark of the regard world rugby holds Umaga in.

Best rememberred for introducing the new Haka, Kapa O Pango in a test match against South Africa in 2005. So long Tana, thanks for the memories.

The Old Penang Ferry

We took the ferry from Penang Island to the mainland during the Raya Haji holidays recently. It was a long wait at the jetty but the children figured it was worth the long wait as they really enjoyed the ferry ride :) We had a beautiful view of the Penang bridge on the horizon together with another ferry passing us.

Hameediyah Restaurant, Penang

We had dinner again at Hameediyah Restaurant, Campbell Street, Penang this time with my little family and dad in law. Hameediyah sports a narrow, long design with an upper floor accessible through a steep spiral stairs. If you're a historian, you'll like this place. It has a sort of pre war historical look. It was quite late, nearly 9:45pm and the kari kepala ikan is no more on the counter. Surprise, surprise they want to make special kari kepala ikan sengain for me with I requested "sikit udang la, kecil cukup", and 15 minutes later there came one big bowl of kepala ikan with a few big prawns.... (mampus sure cekik harga). Hameediyah is synonymous with good traditional Indian Muslim food in Penang. Mention its name and all Penangites will know it. Established in the early 1900s, it is one of the island's oldest restaurants. Today, it is run by Ghani Abdul Shukor and his three brothers Ahmad, Ibrahim and Hamid.

Two top editors resign over ear squat report

Finally.... someone is taking the fall for the 'riot' caused by the suspected Chinese national "ketuk ketampi" issue. See my earlier blog

The Star 6 Jan 2006 KUALA LUMPUR:
Two top editors of China Press have resigned over its report on the naked ear squat pictures published in its night edition on Nov 23. The two submitted their resignation letters, which took effect immediately, to bear full responsibility for “wrongly identifying the woman who was filmed doing ear squats naked in a police locker room as a Chinese national”. The resignations of editor-in-chief Chong Choong Nam and executive editor-in-chief Wong Siew Peng was announced on the front-page of its night edition yesterday.
China Press also stated in its report that it had wrongly identified the woman as a Chinese national and apologised for any inconvenience and misunderstanding caused by the report. On Nov 23, the daily’s night edition reported in its front-page the existence of a video clip of a woman being forced to do ear squats naked in a police locker room, and identified her as a Chinese national. It was later established by an independent commission of inquiry that she was a local Malay woman who had been arrested during a drug bust.

This should serve as a reminder to the other Mat Kepoh out there to be responsible on the reporting, and I believe they did the responsible thing by relingquishing their post. I wonder if others are responsible enough to do the same.

comment on AUGUSTA Sale

Its interesting to see comments of Tun Dr Mahathir and Tunku Mahaleel in the STAR,

The debts of M.V. Agusta are frozen in any case and it need not be paid immediately. Has the amount provided been paid so as to reduce M.V. Agusta’s debts or is it still with Proton when M.V. Agusta was sold at one euro? There are in fact many questions which have to be answered regarding the sale at one euro of an entity that was bought at 70 million euros.
1.Who offered to sell or who offered to buy at one euro?
2.Were there other bidders?
3.Was there an attempt to get the buyer to pay a higher price?
4.Was there an announcement that M.V. Agusta was up for sale? If not, did Proton approach only one bidder? If other
bidders were offered, did they reject?
5.Who in fact made the decision to sell?
6.Can Proton explain how selling an entity bought at 70 million euros for one euro would not cause Proton to lose money as is claimed?

Gevi S.p.A. is not a household name in the automotive industry. Is it a motorcycle company, confident that it can turn around M.V. Agusta, something that the sale by Proton implies that Proton has no capacity or ability to turn it around? Not having to pay 70 million euros will be an advantage for Gevi. We want to know the correct answers. The public too may want to know as Proton is a national project.

DR MAHATHIR BIN MOHAMAD and
TENGKU MAHALEEL TENGKU ARIFF,
Kuala Lumpur.

To me its a fair request to the national car company. Its not long ago on 22nd Sept 2005 Augusta announced record sales in Italy and Europe. The best performances came from Germany (+23.49%), Spain (+55. 45), France (+15.22%) and Belgium (+18.54%) and the figures from Australia showing double the usual sales were boosted by a new Husqvarna sales network that soared from the 299 recorded in 2004 to the current 596.

It proves that things are looking good and this should add value to the negotiation with the new buyer. But at 1 EURO, its rediculous. If we relate that to Freddie Fernandez buying Air Asia for RM 1 (plus few hundred million in debt), its no comparison. Air Asia has 1 leased aircraft and lots of debt while Augusta has landed property, factories (Schiranna (VA) factory) , offices, equipment, know how and goodwill in 3 brands(Augusta, Husqvarna ,Cagiva ), history ( 75 World Titles-38 riders championships and 37 constructors championships) and much more....

Our 2 girls back in 2001

Browsing through my old hard disk I found these photos of Aini & Aina... back in 2001, how time flies

X-mas eve at Kalumpang resort

My better half is away to Aloq Staq this weekend so I followed my sister's family to a little known resort in Kalumpang, with my 3 little terrors and Thoriq in tow. Nice little place with a river flowing through it. The facilities are not too bad. We get a little chalet with a bathroom and and an attic (which has 1 queen bed on the ground floor and 3 mattresses in the attic) all for RM 100 a night. The children didn't have enough courage to go down into the river on the 1st day, mainly because it was raining before we reached the resort and the river was flowing too fast for their liking. Fortunately the next morning it is better and they finally get to swim in the river with their uncle. Me? No way, I am not the 'taking bath in the river type'. Too cold lah.

Its only about 45 minutes from Sg Buloh rest area, take the exit at Tanjung Malim and take the right after the toll plaza. After that it is about 5 km going down to Kuala Kubu.

More China made cars coming

Tuesday December 20, 2005
Alado Bumi Automobile targets to sell 2,000 Chery cars next year (The STAR)

ALADO Bumi Automobile Sdn Bhd, the exclusive importer of Chery's completely-built-up vehicles from China, aims to sell 2,000 units of Chery A160 next year. Alado Bumi president Tan Sri Cam Soh Thiam Hong told StarBiz yesterday. He said the four-cylinder 1.6-litre Chery A160 was priced at between RM59,444 and RM61,496. He said Chery buyers would get two years' free maintenance including oil, filter and labour charge. Approval to import the model was finally given last month. Soh said sister company Alado Corp Sdn Bhd had also received approval to import completely knocked down (CKD) Chery vehicles next year. He said the CKD units would only be available in the middle of next year. On Chery’s SUV and MPV, Soh said they would be priced below RM100,000 each.

Foto:Malcolm Bricklin, left, and Chery President Yin Tongyao plan to introduce this station wagon and other vehicles to the U.S.

So another car maker trying to get another piece of cake from the already crowded car market. The A160 is not too bad. I read somewhere that Chery had some issues with GM and got into legal tangle but I think it must be resolved now that the car is finally coming to our shores. GM is suing Chery over the QQ (see the Alado Malaysia website), a mini car that GM claims Chery copied from GM-Daewoo’s Matiz, that we know in Malaysia as Chevrolet Spark. To add insult to injury, according to recently-released sales data, during the first 7 months of 2005, Chery QQ sold 61,633 units compared to Chevrolet Spark’s 15,912 units.

I am more impressed with the MPV seen in the foto above with the Chery President. If it is really priced below RM 100k, then NAZA Citra and RIA better be on the lookout. The KIAs and HYUNDAIs exposed a few chinks in the Japanese cars armour, maybe this time its the China cars turn. Value is the hook, however. Prototypes of the Chery's models have been designed by renowned Italian designer Bertone. The curvy, sleek vehicles are aimed at going head-to-head with every major automaker -- from Subaru to BMW -- at a fraction of the price.

Maybe our own carmaker should take note of this and along the way bring down the car prices, making it more affordable and lo and behold, increase the sagging sales. No point paying millions for a British brand that is going down the drain, nor I don't think it is a good idea buying a motorbike company that Tom Cruise use in Mission Impossible 2. On the other hand I think it was brilliant of them to sponsor Norwich City FC. I guess they manage to build up some form of a brand name. Maybe thats why Tony Fernandes's Air Asia took up the courage to sponsor Manchester United. Brave and bold move and I am sure it burnt a big black hole in their pocket. Kudos to him, with not much of government subsidy they are not too far behind in value with our local carrier. Gosh I am moving too far out of the topic.

Visit of P.T. Krama Yudha Tiga Berlian Motors

Well basically the company P.T. Krama Yudha Tiga Berlian Motors is Mitsubishi Motors Corporation's sales company in Indonesia. They arrived in Malaysia to check out on the 2 big moulds we are doing for the MITSUBISHI TRUCKS. They are visiting a few vendors in Malaysia over the next few days and our company is one of them. We had quite a long meeting, being Japanese the attention to details is understandable and we had to go over the final schedule over and over again until they are satistied. We thought the meeting will last maximum of 2 hours but in the end the meeting lasted about 4 hours. At long last the KTB guys are satisfied and off they go to Penang. See you guys on Thursday then.

The Power Of Love - FGTH

The Power Of Love by Frankie Goes To Hollywood

I'll protect you from the hooded claw,Keep the vampires from your door
Feels like fire,I'm so in love with you
Dreams are like angels,They keep bad at bay-bad at bay
Love is the light,Scaring darkness away-yeah
I'm so in love with you,Purge the soul
Make love your goal

The power of love,A force from above
Cleaning my soul,Flame on burn desire
Love with tongues of fire,Purge the soul
Make love your goal

I'll protect you from the hooded claw,Keep the vampires from your door
When the chips are down I'll be around,With my undying, death-defying
Love for you,Envy will hurt itself
Let yourself be beautiful,Sparkling love, flowers
And pearls and pretty girls,Love is like an energy
Rushin' rushin' inside of me

This time we go sublime,Lovers entwine-divine divine
Love is danger, love is pleasure,Love is pure-the only treasure
I'm so in love with you,Purge the soul
Make love your goal,The power of love
A force from above,Cleaning my soul
The power of love,A force from above
A sky-scraping dove,Flame on burn desire
Love with tongues of fire,Purge the soul
Make love your goal

Who the %*$# is FGTH?

To the uninitiated, they are Frankie Goes To Hollywood http://www.fgth.org.uk/ who were notorious back in the 80's. Frankie Goes to Hollywood dominated British music in 1984. What really distinguished the group was not their music, but their marketing campaign. With a series of slogans, T-shirts, and homoerotic videos, the band caused enormous controversy in England and managed to create some sensations in the United States. However, the Frankie sensation was finished as soon as it was started; by the release of their second album, Liverpool, in 1986, the group's audience had virtually disappeared. Based in Liverpool, Frankie Goes to Hollywood formed in 1980, comprising ex-Big in Japan vocalist Holly Johnson, vocalist Paul Rutherford, guitarist Nasher Nash, bassist Mark O'Toole, and drummer Peter Gill. Originally called Hollycaust, but they changed their name to Frankie Goes to Hollywood -- taken from an old headline about Frank Sinatra's acting career -- by the end of the year. The band didn't make anything of note until 1982, when they appeared on the British television program The Tube with a rough version of the video for "Relax." The appearance attracted attention from several record labels as well as record producer Trevor Horn. Horn contacted the band and signed them to his label, ZTT. Late in 1983, Frankie's first single, the Horn-produced "Relax"/"Ferry Cross the Mersey," was released. A driving dance number, "Relax" featured sexually suggestive lyrics that would soon lead to great controversy. Around the time of the release of "Relax," Frankie's promotional director, Paul Morley, a former music journalist, orchestrated a massive, intricate marketing campaign that soon paid off in spades. Morley designed T-shirts that read "Relax" and "Frankie Says...," which eventually appeared across the country. The "Relax" video was banned by British TV and a new version was shot. Similarly, Radio 1 banned the single and the rest of the BBC radio and television networks quickly banned the record as well. Consequently, "Relax" shot to number one in January of 1984 and soon sold over a million copies. Frankie's second single, the political "Two Tribes," was released in June of 1984. The single, which was also produced by Trevor Horn, entered the charts at number one; it went gold in seven days. "Two Tribes" stayed at number one for nine weeks and eventually sold over a million copies. While it was on the top of the charts, "Relax" went back up the charts, peaking at number two.
Welcome to the Pleasuredome, the band's Trevor Horn-produced debut double album, entered the U.K. charts at number one and their third single, the ballad "The Power of Love," also reached number one. Welcome to the Pleasuredome reached at number 33 in early 1985 in the U.S., prompting the re-release of "Relax"; this time around, it made it into the American Top Ten.

Nude woman in ear squats video clip is a local Malay

http://www.thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2005/12/14/nation/12861457&sec=nation

KUALA LUMPUR: The woman who was filmed doing ear squats naked in a police locker room was not a Chinese national but a local Malay.

Well finally the secret identity is revealed. Now suddenly the DAP and MCA guys are not interested anymore just because it is a known fact that the mystery woman is not the Chinese national it was said to be. Does that mean it is ok for a Malay woman to be forced nude in the police lock up? I begin to wonder the real motive behind the 'noise' made by those parties on the nude girl issue. Is it related to the news a few weeks ago that more than 50,000 Chinese national entered the country but did not leave.Taking the words from a Mr Aziz Hassan in his letter to NST: What about the directive to flush them out? Has this been overtaken by events, considering how we appear to be bending backwards to appease China? Was it not just months ago that we read stories of how girls from China were involved in the flesh trade while under the pretext of being waitresses and hostesses at restaurants and bars along the coastline? Was it not serious enough for local housewives to complain to their local MCA representatives to take up the case on their behalf because their marriages were under threat? What do we do the next time and everytime another foreign national alleges mistreatment by us? Despatch another minister to Nigeria, Iran, Russia, India, Myanmar, Vietnam and Indonesia? We have apologised even before most of the facts of the case, especially the nationality of the woman, have yet to be determined and there have been calls for more apologies. What if the probe finds that many of the “facts” were wrong? Will anyone have the decency to apologise to the police? One doubts.

Woman in clip recalls incident at police station
http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2005/12/14/nation/12859406&sec=nation
KUALA LUMPUR: The woman at the centre of the inquiry into the naked ear squat video clip was arrested in June for drug possession. She told the Commission of Inquiry yesterday that police arrested her at a primary school in Damansara Jaya, Selangor, at 1am on June 29 on suspicion of having the drug syabu.
The petite woman whose identity was withheld by the commission started her testimony at 9.45am, saying that she was “a 22-year-old Malaysian of Malay descent”.

Describing the events on the day she was arrested, she said: “I was brought to the Damansara Utama police station and later to the Petaling Jaya police station.”
At the Petaling Jaya station, a policewoman told her to take a urine test. “After the test, I was taken to a room with many lockers and was told to strip. Then I was told to do ear squats to make sure that nothing was hidden on my body. I did that facing the policewoman who was standing at the closed door. I did less than 10 squats. I felt shamed and angry. Then I was told to put on my clothes. My hair was tied up in a ponytail,” she said. She said that while putting on her clothes, she faced away from the policewoman and was not aware if there was a window nearby.

At last something other than Padang food

Finally I tried something other than Padang food, I guess if I keep on eating padang food my heart surgeon friend will be more than happy to have me under his knife.

We had lunch at Dapur Sunda, a nice restaurant serving good Sundanese food, well at least my stomach did not reject it. Dapur Sunda (Sundanese Kitchen) is well known for its traditional West Javanese menu that includes charcoal-grilled chicken, goldfish pepes (steamed fish wrapped in banana leaves) and a selection of traditional desserts and cocktails. It is located near Menteng not far from Maharadja Hotel.

Jakarta's big MACET

We missed the flight back to KL on Wed. The flight was at 1830, unfortunately we only arived at the Airport at 1930. I went to the MAS office at Sukarno-Hatta Airport, explained the situation and they gave me a new ticket for the next day, and it cost me nothing, it happened too many times they said.

It took us 4 hours to reach the airport when the normal journey time should be only 30-45 minutes. Traffic was at a standstill. I was told later its caused by flooding.

While waiting in the jam we saw a really packed train on the flyover, note the people sitting on the roof.

Trip to Jakarta

I had to go away to Jakarta on Sunday, took the evening flight and by nightfall checked into a dinghy Hotel Perdana. Our customer wanted the latest update on the moulds ordered from the Jkarta and Shah Alam factory. It seems that the Shah Alam moulds are at the advanced stage compared to the ones in Jakarta. After a long meeting with the guys from PT Krama Yudha Tiga Berlian we had take them around to one of our subsidiary's subcontractor to check on the latest development. After that its Nasi Padang time.

Khatam Quran - Aini

Aini did her Khatam Quran ceremony during my cousin's wedding in November. Taking cue from sahabah of our Rasullulah s.a.w. , Abdullah Ibn Abbas , one of his noted amalan is to attend Majlis Khatam Quran. The benefits to be present at such a gathering is manifolds.According to one Hadith, there will be 70,000 malaikat in attendance

" When the Quran is read, listen to it with attention, and hold your peace: that ye may receive Mercy. " Quran 7:204
The Khatam al-Quran marks the completion of reading of the entire Quran, the holy book of Islam. Aini , with her cousins, are required to read verses from the 30th and final section of the Holy Quran before his parents, his Quran teacher and invited guests. Once she completes her reading, she kisses the hands of his Quran teacher, and each of the guests in that order. She then descends from the dais (pelamin) where she was seated while reading the Quran, to join the prepared feast.

Allahummarhamni Bil QuranWaj’alhu lii Imaaman Wa Nuuran Wa Huda Wa RohmahAllahumma Dzakkirni Minhu maa NasiituWa’allimni Minhu maa JahiiltuWarzuqnii TilaawatahuAana Al Laili Wa Aana An NahaariWaj’alhu lii HujjatanYaa Rabbal ‘Alamin

The ceremony was followed by the wedding of my cousin. Which was a grand affair set in the colonial surrounding of old government quarters in Kuala Kubu Baru.

P/S: Aina n Aina even had the chance to pose with their favourite leading actor, Rosyam Nor who attended the wedding
