Our factory open house

Well its actually the 2nd Zulkaedah, way past Syawal but yesterday our factory had our open house in Shah Alam. In these bad times we could still organise a get together with the staff and customers and suppliers in the Raya spirit.

Grilled lamb portion and chicken is the spotlight of the day, even a whole lamb on the grill failed to take the spotlight away from the other 2 main dish.

We also had satay, mee, laksa, nasi goreng but from what I see on the day those are bottom of the slurp list of our foreign workers namely from Bangladesh and India. They huddled around the lamb tent waiting for their turn.

There was good turnout, weather was nice. started very bright and hot but laedter turn cloudy :) most of the invited guests were there and I hope the staff went hope with stomach full of good food :)

Chong Kok revisited

My favourite kopitiam in Klang is the Chong Kok kopitiam. It has been around since prewars I believe because the phone number on the billboard is still 5 digits :) Those days it used to be a bar with a hotel on the first floor but since the 70's more and more frequented it as a coffee shop, aka kopitiam.

The secret could be in the oldman making the coffee, maybe he has been around since day 1, his coffee making look simple and easy and within minutes the excellent coffee is on your table. My favourite is to drink that with the roti bakar and roti steam, perfectly burnt on an old arang stove top it up with a perfect 1/2 boiled eggs, yummy. 2 kampung eggs boiled in old pot I guess with all the 50 years history in it making it a nowhere to be found Chong Kok Special.

The old grandad's house

This house was built in the 50's, it won the best house and area category in the 80's for Pulau Indah (it used to be called Pulau Lumut then), even he Sultan of Selangor came to the house, it can even boast of having 2 swimming pools.. :) but it is now left empty and dilapidated.

I am now thinking if we could turn this house into a guest house/home stay chalet for visitors to Pulau Indah. Any willing investor?

Peringatan Raja Melayu

KUALA TERENGGANU: The Conference of Rulers has come out with a strong statement defending the country’s social contract. While stressing the need for Malays to be united, the Rulers assured the non-Malays of their rights under the Federal Constitution.

This is the full press statement issued by the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal, Engku Tan Sri Ibrahim Engku Ngah at the end of the 215th Conference of Rulers held at the Istana Maziah in Kuala Terengganu Thursday

“Press Statement issued by the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal on the role of the Yang diPertuan Agong and the Malay Rulers regarding the special privileges, position, eminence or greatness of the Malay Rulers, Islam, Malay as the national language, the special position of the Malays, and genuine interests of the other communities in accordance with the Federal Constitution.

“The Malay Rulers who attended the meeting of the Conference of Rulers conferred on the issuing of this special joint press statement today.

“The Malay Rulers hold the constitutional role to safeguard the special privileges, position, eminence and greatness of the Malay Rulers, safeguard Islam, Malay as the National Language, and the genuine interests of the other communities in Malaysia.

“The actions of certain quarters in disputing and questioning these matters, which formed the primary basis for the formation of Malaysia and are enshrined in the Federal Constitution, had caused provocation and uneasiness among the people. In retaliation, several quarters particularly Malay leaders whether in the government or non-governmental organisations as well as individuals had expressed their dissatisfaction and anger against those who had made the statements and reports and organised the forums.

“Among the reasons identified for these to have occurred is the cursory knowledge of those concerned regarding the historical background as to why these provisions were enshrined in the Federal Constitution and the influence of their attempts to implicate the principles of impartiality and justice without regard for the historical background and social condition of this country. Narrow political interests are also a cause.

“Unless this phenomenon is arrested immediately, it can lead to disunity and racial strife that can undermine the peace and harmony which has all this while brought progress, development and success to the nation.

“As such, it is necessary for the Conference of Rulers to emphasise and remind all quarters of these constitutional provisions besides giving emphasis to the assurance of safeguarding the genuine rights of other communities.

"It has to be emphasised that each provision in the Federal Constitution has undergone the process of discussion, consideration, consultancy, sacrifice and compromise of the highest degree for what has been championed, discussed, considered, benefited from as well as agreed to by all quarters concerned, until the realisation of the provisions in the Federal Constitution which are known as the Social Contract.

"It is not proper to dispute and question this Social Contract and more so to subject it to a review or change because it is the primary basis of the formation of Malaysia. Therefore, it is appropriate for the Malay Rulers to remind that there should never be any attempt ever to test and challenge issues related to the Social Contract.

“Truly, the leaders of the pre-independence era were insightful and farsighted. They brought along with them the Malay Rulers for the negotiations to claim independence. The Institution of the Rulers was retained and legally enshrined in the constitution of an independent Malaysia.

The Institution of the Rulers was accorded eminence, was positioned at the apex of Government, as the head of the country and the states, as a protective umbrella, ensuring impartiality among the citizens. The Institution of Rulers takes on the role of being a check-and-balance factor to untangle complications, if any.

“The Conference of Rulers also calls on the Malays to be united to safeguard the privileges, position, eminence and greatness of the Malay Rulers, safeguard Islam, Malay as the national language, and the genuine interests of the other communities in Malaysia as enshrined in the Federal Constitution.

"It has to be emphasised that this agenda is more important and foremost than political or factional interests.

“Non-Malays should not harbour any apprehension or worry over their genuine rights because these rights are guaranteed under the Federal Constitution and provisions of the state constitutions of Malaysia contained in Article 153 of the Federal Constitution.

“It is hoped that with this emphasis, all confusion among the people regarding these matters can be contained and an atmosphere of peace, harmony and mutual respect can continue to exist among the people for the maintenance of order in the country.” - Bernama

Keistimewaan

Menghormati

Trip to immigration department

Today I finally have the time to bring the 3 kids to the Immigration department for their international passport. At about 10am we went to Shah Alam and the place was jam packed with people, the queue was right to the entrance of the office, thinking that I could beat the crowd we drove to Subang Terminal 2, no different here, there were about 60-70 people queuing just to get the number.

I gave up and drove home. At 1pm I went again to Shah Alam and they don't give out any more new numbers for the day. OK last try, off we went to Port Klang immigration office at 1.30pm.

Its not too bad at Port Klang, yes there are lots of people but the queue is shorter, we went to take the photos in the makeshift boot below the flight of stairs and in less than 1 hour I have completed the forms, handed in the forms and photo, went thru the details witht the officer, paid the fees and tomorrow we can come and collect the passports. I was told that they received more than 400 applications for today compared to about 250 applications on normal days.

The plan for tomorrow is to pick up the new passports in the afternoon before we start our long journey to Kedah for Raya :)

A swipe at Mat Bodek from Che Det

I smiled alone reading this comment. Trust Tun to comment on this and write in in such a way to make one think.

Coat of arms of the Federated Malay States (1895-1946)

The Malayan Union was a federation of the Malay states and the Straits Settlements excluding Singapore. It was the successor to British Malaya and was conceived to unify the Malay Peninsula under a single government so as to simplify administration.

The idea of the Union was first expressed by the British on October 1945 in the aftermath of the Second World War by the British Military Administration . Sir Harold MacMichael was assigned the task of gathering the Malay state rulers' approval for the Malayan Union in the same month. In a short period of time, he managed to obtain all the Rulers’ approval by threatening to accuse them as Japanese collaborators if they did not approve.[citation needed] Hence the approval was given, though it was with utmost reluctance.

The Malayan Union gave equal rights to people who wished to apply for citizenship. It was automatically granted to people who were born in any state in British Malaya or Singapore and were living there before 15 February 1942, born outside British Malaya or the Straits Settlements only if their fathers were citizens of the Malayan Union and those who reached 18 years old and who had lived in British Malaya or Singapore "10 out of 15 years before 15 February 1942". The group of people eligible for application of citizenship had to live in Singapore or British Malaya "for 5 out of 8 years preceding the application", had to be of good character, understand and speak the English or Malay Language and " had to take an oath of allegiance to the Malayan Union".

The Sultans, the traditional rulers of the Malay states, conceded all their powers to the British Crown except in religious matters. The Malayan Union was placed under the jurisdiction of a British Governor, signalling the formal inauguration of British colonial rule in the Malay peninsula. Moreover, even though State Councils were still kept functioning in the former Federated Malay States, it lost the limited autonomy that they enjoyed as they administered some local and less important aspects of government and the Federal government in Kuala Lumpur controlling vital aspects. State Councils became an extended hand of the Federal government that had to do its bidding. Also, British Residents replacing the Sultans as the head of the State Councils meant that the political status of the Sultans were greatly reduced.

King George VI, Governor Edward Gent, Historical era Decolonization, - Established April 1, 1946, - Disestablished January 31, 1948, Area - 1948 132,364 km² (51,106 sq mi)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malayan_Union

Melayu 680,000 (33%)
Cina 911,000 (44%)
India 466,000 (23%)
JUMLAH 2,057,000 (100%)

Mahathir on POHON MAAF

"Pohon Maaf"

Contoh:

a) Kerajaan dikatakan dibantu oleh "Islamic Extremist violent armed terrorists" (orang Melayu)

d) Tiap tiga minggu kuil Hindu diroboh.

HUIZE TRIVELLI, Jl Tanah Abang, Jakarta

all my posts on Huize Trevelli:

Tired of the usual nasi padang and Sunda food I tried this colonial Dutch restaurant called HUIZE TRIVELLI. The building is one of the remaining original houses of European-Dutch housing complex which was built in 1939. Right from the entrance you can see the antique decor which makes you feel like being transported in time to the old Batavia era. One thing to note is the chairs are huge :) not like small restaurant chairs which is just big enough for my bum. It is a Heritage Resto and Pattisier. You can see old photos adorning the walls with Dutch songs and old keroncong songs playing in the background. There are a couple of private dining rooms, (most likely the bedrooms before), I think they need the extra rooms because the place is quite small for a restaurant, maybe enough for about 40-50 pax. Food is ok, not too bad, they have a mix of Dutch recipe and some Indonesian dishes. I especially like the starters, Travelli Insulinde Pastei, that one I liked it so much that I ordered two of it. Price is OK to with main course between Rph 30,000-50,000 and drinks in the region of Rph 8,500-15,000 depending on what you ordered.

Unfortunately smoking is only allowed on the outside but that is not too bad either. You can have a table in the little garden outside and listen to the sound of water trickling down the roof into the pond.

About Huize Trivelli (from their website)
As a matter of fact our family belongs to a family clan of Old Batavia family (Betawi Tempo Doeloe) who have settled in Batavia since ± 200 years ago. Since hundreds of years ago, Batavia has become a transit, trade center, and even the settlment of various nationalities from all over the world. So diversed social and cultural values have made Batavians have their own unique traditions amd culture. Or, in other words, the culture and tradition that are resulted from the acculturation of various culture and traditions such as Arabs, Chinese, Europeans, as well as various number of indigineous traditional cultures from Indonesia itself. The blend of such cultural traits, patterns and traditions has been manifested in many aspects of life in our family.
